Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting Guide

1 2 3 4 5

The town of Cheltenham in England, best known for the Gold Cup horse race in March each year, was originally founded as a spa town, and has been frequented by the well to do since the mid 18th century.
Cheltenham is very easy to reach by train from London and other major cities, and there are taxis and public transport, so if prefer not to rent a car, you have plenty of other options.
If you are looking for a relaxing break in a historic town you will find a wide choice: from 4 star hotels to comfortable guest accommodation, smart serviced apartments or the freedom of self- catering or caravan and camping.
If you want to get to Celtenham by air, there`s not a lot to choose between either Birmingham or Bristol airports. Both are pretty easy to reach Cheltenham from. From Birmingham airport you will have to get a train to Birmingham New Street then change for Cheltenham. Or from Bristol Airport, you can take the bus to Bristol Temple Meads and then the train to Cheltenham.
The racecourse is a little over a mile from Celtenham center, maybe a mile and a half from the railway station. During the festival there are shuttle buses from the station.

Betting stake

The betting stake is the amount of money you are willing to bet on a horse

Types of betting

When betting on a horse race, you will find the following betting types:
To Win - the bet will be placed on a horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup Race. The bet will be lost if the horse does not win the race.

Each Way -This bet is placed for a horse to come in any of the top 4 places in the race. This bet actually is formed of 2 bets. One bet is placed on the horse to win the race, and the full odds apply to this part, and another bet is placed on the horse to come in one of the top places and only a quarter of the odds apply this part of the bet. One Each Way bet cost therefore 2, with 1 being placed on the horse to win, and 1 placed on the horse to come in the first 4 places. The bet will be lost if the horse does not come in the 4 top places of the race.

Placing a bet

To place a bet, simply locate the horse you want to bet on from the bookmaker`s offer, place your stake (usually is minimum £2), and select which bet you are placing, "to win" or "each way"

The winnings

To Win bet - If the horse you put money on wins, the stake is multiplied by the odds to calculate your winnings and is payd along with the original betting stake. For example if a £10 bet is placed in a horse with odds of 10-1, the £10 stake is multiplied by 10 (giving 100) and is paid with the original betting £10 stake, for a total of £110, if the horse wins.

Each Way bet - If the horse wins, the first part of the betting stake is multiplied by the odds and paid with the original stake and the other half of the betting stake is multiplied by a quarter of the odds and paid aling with the original stake. For example a £5 stake on an Each Way bet (£10 betting stake) is placed on a horse at odds of 10-1, the original £5 stake is multiplied by 10 (giving £50) and returned with the original bet of £5 for a total of £55. The other £5 of the bet, is multiplied by a quarter of the odds - 2.5, giving a total of £12.5, and paid with the original bet for a total of 17.5. Therefore if the horse wins, the total winning will be £55+£17.5=£72.5

If the horse fails to win the race, but comes in the first 4, the first part of the bet is lost and the second part is multiplied by a quarter of the odds and paid with the original part of the betting stake. For example, a £5 bet (£10 bet stake) placed on a horse at 10-1 odds, the original £5 stake is lost. The other £5 of the bet is multiplied by a quarter of the odds - 2.5, and paid with the original £5 stake, for a total of £17.5.
If you win a bet on a horse, the amount you win, will be automatically credited to your betting account. You can then use the money to place future bets, or ou can widthraw the money from your betting account (subject to terms and conditions) and the money will be credited to your credit or debit card.

When deciding on your bets Cheltenham Gold Cup it is important you look into some race trends before making your selections. It is very important because horse that have won this race will normally have a number of attributes similar to other Gold Cup winners. You are more likely to win money by selecting horses that show these `trends`.

Here are some trends you could look to before deciding on your bet:

In the last 10 years , horses that have won this race were aged at least 6 years. In fact it was only a single winner with this age, Long Run 2011. The last two winners were 8 years each.

The jockeys with the most win are Ruby Walsh , who won in 2007 and 2009 , and Barry Geraghty, who also got two titles , in 2005 and recently in 2013.

The trainer with the most win is Paul Nicholls who won consecutive in 2007,2008 and 2009 , followed by Nicky Henderson , who has 2 wins in 2011 and in 2013.

8 from the last 10 winners won recently at least a 3 mile race.

9 from the last 10 winners ran in the Lexus Chase or in the King George.

Horses that have won at Cheltenham in the past proved to perform better in Gold Cup.

The betting markets are a good indicator that every horses potential has been closely studied. In the last 12 races, 9 horses that won the race had odds of under 7.50

Silviniaco Conti This is the first race for him .Ridden by N D Fehily he won 3 from 5 races he attended in 2014, winning consecutive the last two races, the Betfair Chase a 3m1f race and the William Hill King George VI Chase a 3m race. In 2014 he ended the Gold Cup in fourth place.
Many Clouds The 8 years old Brown Gelding, ridden by L P Aspell ended 2014 very well, winning the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase (2m4f) and the Hennessy Gold Cup Chase (3m 2f 110y). Also he had a good start in 2015 getting the first place in the BetBright Cup Chase (3m 1f 110y).
Road To Riches This is a good horse and he is in good form. Got 4 wins and ended second last year, from a total of seven races .
Holywell This horse won last year the Baylis & Harding Affordable Luxury Handicap Chase at Cheltenham, a 3m 100 y race. Also he started well this year winning the 3m2f race Ivan Straker Memorial Chase.
Carlingford Lough Aged nine, he got six place last year at Cheltenham in the RSA Chase, a 3m and 110 yards race. This year , ridden by AP McCoy he won the Hennessy Gold Cup a 3 mile race.

The favorites to win this race are Silviniaco Conti with a best odd of 4.50, Many Clouds with a best odd of 9.40 and Road to Riches with a best odd of 10.00

Silviniaco Conti 4.50 PADDY POWER Top favorite to win this race. Participated last year at the Gold Cup, knows the racecourse, and recent victories show that it is in good shape. A good strategy from start to finish, and the victory will be his.
Many Clouds 9.40 BETDAQ Bookies favorite number two. He is in a good form chances for him to reached the podium being high.
Road to Riches 10.00 BETFRED Only third favorite in the bookmakers opinion. He is in good form, it might not be good enough to pose problems to the first two favorites.
Holywell 11.50 BETDAQ Fourth favorite to win this race, but if he run like at Kelso this year , he has a chance at podium.
Carlingford Lough 11.00 PADDY POWER It is not seen as the main favorite, but if you bet on it and you win, your gains will be very high.
